Five Years of Sota Bookkeeping: What the Numbers Don’t Show

A reflection on community, clarity, and the unexpected rewards of entrepreneurship.
Five years ago, I took a leap. I left the comfort of a predictable paycheck and started Sota Bookkeeping with a simple belief: small business owners deserve financial clarity without the jargon. What I didn’t expect was how much this journey would teach me - not about numbers, but about people.
As I mark this milestone, I want to reflect on three things that have shaped these five years in ways I never anticipated.
1. The Small Business Community Is Something Special
When I first announced I was starting Sota Bookkeeping, something unexpected happened: people showed up. Fellow entrepreneurs, business owners I barely knew, people I hadn’t spoken to in years - all offering encouragement, advice, and genuine support. There’s a camaraderie in the small business world that you simply can’t understand until you’re part of it.
And that spirit didn’t stop at the starting line. Over the past five years, I’ve had countless conversations with small business owners about why they started their companies. A contractor who wanted to build something with his hands and leave a legacy for his kids. A baker who turned a pandemic hobby into a thriving storefront. A consultant who left corporate life to finally work on her own terms. Every story is different, and every single one is driven by passion.
Hearing those stories made me more intentional about my own ‘why.’ It also reminded me that entrepreneurship can be lonely, and that the antidote is connection. I’ve made a conscious effort to build genuine relationships with my clients, not just professional ones. Because when you’re both navigating the unpredictability of running a business, there’s real value in having someone in your corner who truly gets it.
If you’re thinking about starting a business: the community waiting for you on the other side is truly one of the best parts of the leap.
2. “You Don’t Speak Like an Accountant”
Over the years, clients have given me a lot of feedback, but the comment I’m most proud of? “You don’t speak like an accountant.” Multiple clients have said some version of this, and I couldn’t be happier.
No one starts a business because they love bookkeeping. Most owners would rather be doing literally anything else - serving customers, developing products, growing their team. The financial side of things often feels like an obligation at best and an intimidating obstacle at worst.
That’s why one of my core goals with Sota Bookkeeping has always been to demystify financial statements. A profit and loss statement shouldn’t feel like a foreign language. A balance sheet shouldn’t require a translator. When a client can look at their numbers and actually understand what they’re seeing, that’s when bookkeeping stops being a liability and starts being an asset. (Pun very much intended.)
The goal has never been to impress clients with complexity or accountant-speak. It’s to give them the confidence to make informed decisions about their own businesses. That shift - from confusion to clarity - is one of the most rewarding things I get to be part of.
3. Clean Books Change Everything
Over the past five years, I’ve helped many small business owners clean up their books - some going as far back as seven years. It’s one of the most satisfying parts of the work I do, and also one of the most eye-opening.
What I’ve come to understand is that messy or neglected books aren’t just a financial problem, they’re a mental one. Business owners often don’t realize the weight they’re carrying until it’s lifted. When we get the books reconciled and organized, something shifts. They’re no longer dreading the financial side of things. They can stop avoiding it and start using it.
Accurate books open doors. They make it possible to spot trends, identify unnecessary expenses, plan for slow seasons, and make smart hiring decisions. More than that, they free up the mental energy to focus on the parts of the business the owner actually loves - the reason they started it in the first place.
That’s the real value of good bookkeeping. Not compliance. Not tax season. The ability to run your business with confidence and clarity.
Here’s to the Next Five
Five years in, I’m more energized about this work than ever. I’ve been lucky enough to work with incredible clients, build real relationships, and (hopefully) make the financial side of business a little less daunting for the people I serve.
Thank you to every client who has trusted Sota Bookkeeping with their business. Thank you to the small business community that showed up for me when I was just getting started. The numbers have been good, but the people have been even better.
